Description

The upper part of the Rhônegletscher is a rugged world, containing rocks, ice and snow. The greenish yellow spots on the rocks are caused by lychens and grasses, for which this harsh environment is 'home'. The glacier is fed by the precipitation on mountains like the Dammastock (3630 m, 11910 ft). The lateral moraine shows here once again how the glacier has shrunk; it must have been approximately 60 meters (180 ft) thicker.
