Description

1 of 6 This picture shows the Mars Lander USS Chesapeake after touchdown in the Ophir Chasma region of Mars. The crew is on its first EVA to check out the surrounding area. Due to an onboard computer glitch the Lander is off course and has just barely escaped a major catastrophe missing a rock out cropping. The crew now has the unfortunate task of having to hike over 2 miles to the LZ where most of its equipment has landed over the last 12 months to establish a base camp. This will be 1 of 6 different images that I will be posting working on various viewing angles of the Lander with different terrains and skies. As always everything in the picture was created in Bryce by me including all textures. Thanks again for taking the time to view and comment on my work. Cheers, David

I just cannot get over how AMAZING your terrain work is on this image! The hardware is of course up to your usual impeccable standards, but the landscape just blows me away! I almost can't believe this is a Bryce image, your terrain/texture mat work is SO convincing!

You have created an outstanding landscape scenery! A Bryce render with such a depth of field is rarely seen. Great theme too!

The terrain and the textures are amazing, they look just like the photographs from Spirit and Opportunity. Very impressive indeed...

DId the guy coming down the steps annoy the others? They've walked off without him. As always, this is epic in scale and your patience has no bounds. Great texture work in this one too. looking forward to 2 of 6. By 6 of 6, who knows ;-)

This is brilliant stuff as always, but.....this is a lander, right? Shouldn't there have been some disturbance of the soil beneath the jets and perhaps scorching of the vehicle itself? The ground at the landing site appears to be no different than the rest of the landscape.

I could spend a day just finding new things in the landscape. Truely a colossal undertaking with the terrain editor.

First off I would like to thank everyone for their comments. There was a comment from amapitodd about how long the picture took to render, about 19 hours. Bryster you mention that you cannot see any scorching of the vehicle itself but, if you look closely there is scorching around the bottom perimeter of the Lander. You will also see a little scorching around the landing gear housing area also but, it will only be on the housing area nearest the hull not around the entire section. As far as what the thrusters kick up on landing, the soil around the base has been disturbed as you can see by the dust that has been blown up on the landing gear pads. Im still trying to determine what color the soil should be from the chemical reaction from the main thrusters. Remember we only have had 2 instances of a Lander using this method (the Viking missions) and as far as I know we just dont have any pictures that Im aware of showing the disturbance from the thruster to the immediate area underfoot. I will try to work on this subject more as I release more images in this series.

Absolutely fantastic!!! Makes my Mars pictures look like shlock. I'm not normally one to be envious of other people's work, but as I glanced down at my arm, I can definitely see my skin is turning a bit on the green side! :) I'll definitely add this picture to my favorites list!

Superb work Dave, I love the landscape, and the two figures give the whole thing a sense of scale. The modelling is amazing, but you know that already!

Absolutely phenomenal terrain work here, and just astounding texturing. I'm searching really hard for something to criticize out of jealousy but I'm having a lot of trouble. You shouldn't post at Renderosity any more; you make us all look bad. ;) A rather late v.

The terrain work here is fantastic. Wish I could figure out how to do astronauts in Bryce. Great modeling skills.
