I think the effect that really makes the cold feeling is the lighting from underneath. It's almost like light being reflected off of ice or snow. Very nicely done. I read a story once where a warrior would go into a beserk fighting rage when he tasted blood, so he always chomped down on his own tongue before any battle. That's what this reminds me of as well!
