Description

The polar caps of Mars are made of water ice and CO2 frozen out of the atmosphere. At these latitudes, the air is thin and the sky would be dark, except for the red dust. This dust also coats the surface of the caps. I present a hypothetical view of a Martian polar cap around springtime when the CO2 is subliming back into the atmosphere. Happy weekend, all & thanks for looking in!

Beautiful lighting, pov, shadows, and choice of terrain. The only little thing I can't help but notice is that the foreground is a little too sharpened. I am picky, though, and this is an excellent image, still!

OK y'all - my conscience is eating at me - I have a confession to make. This render took 27 mins for a 2000 X 1500. The surfacing consists of the base (of course), and only two child layers. Terrain is WM, and it was one I didn't have much hope for. I came up with the Mars Polar Cap idea because it sort of looked like something I saw on the JPL website. You all have been too kind with the nice comments - I thought this one was going to go flat. But thanks, all - your're a great group!

I think in conception and execution this is outstanding. Atmo and lighting takes prize.

Good Lord!!! 27 min. and three layers, and you can still produce outstanding stuff like this!!! I agree with stbc, that haze is magnificent, as is that icy, grainy texture!!

A real pleasure to view. I love anything to do with the exploration of Mars. The time it took to render doesn't matter- the end result speaks for itself.

the picture is great and changes from the usual dusty redish desert. However I don'y agree with you on the dust : in the poles, I don't see any evidences that the dust is present in sufficient amount to create the usual redish martian sky, unless you are on the edges of the cap and you look at the horizon above the suurounding plains. But if you are at the center of the cap, with no other horizon than white ice or CO2,and if there is no dust in suspension, why the sky would look red ? So there is no "hard" data that prooves without doubt that if you are in the center of a matian pole, you see the sky redish instead, for example, than a dark blue or black or purple. I personnaly think it would be very dark blue or dark purple. I also think that the surface would be smoother and more reflective than the one you render here. But excellent job anyway, I hope you don't mind the critics.

I don't know what it looks like 'cos I've never been there, but I think this is well imagined and well executed.

I don't care if it took 27 hours or 27 mins. If it only has 2 layers or 20. It is very well done and a stunning work.V

Hey Rich you're a decent person... it doesn't matter that it took only a few minutes to render and depending on the scene you want to create to much surface layers can destroy the intended character of a scene... with ease you can create a scene which would took days to render but making a beautiful scene which renders in 27 mins is the trick ;-) you have done an excellent job here - I like it!
