Description

Another view of the carvings at Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. This is the view from the 'crossroads' parking lot near the re-created town. Yesterday's view (following) was from the parking lot near the cable cars. To give you an idea of the size of these: they are approx 109 feet tall and the display is approx 190 feet wide. (Sorry, I can't think metric right now.) Big by any scale normally used on land. Some more history: These were to be the first of an army of 1,000 figures carved along the mountain. Funds did not permit this; sanity also came to the rescue. This would have been one BIG display. Lee is so huge that when he was first carved, they set up a picnic table on his shoulder.

It held 13 diners and the wait-staff. This gives the viewer a good look at the sculpture. The view posted yesterday looks as if three horsemen are riding through low brush landscape: the brushes are full-grown trees about 3/4 the way between the photographer and the horsemen. Just to put things in a proper perspective. (FWIW: we are now, finally, in Merlin [Maryland] and I know this is a rich field for photography. You've been warned. All ferrets who set out with us arrived in one piece... despite their attempts to tempt fate all the way.) [BTW: Butch was right. This is only a fraction of the granite outcrop. I'll try to give a better perspective next time.] Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

Glad to hear all of you made it home safely (and that you took advantage of the drive). Gorgeous pictures, as usual. -Guess who...
