Description

All the way from the elevator, Karl knew they'd be there. They were always there. As he approached the turn in the hallway, he stopped. Leaning against the wall to try and slow his breathing, Karl could hear the soft huffing noise. They were there, all right. "Hello, Mr. Turnbull." Mrs. Lupens said cheerily as she walked past with her wastebasket. "No, don't go out there!", the man hissed sharply, causing the old woman to shudder and cringe. She looked at him and frowned. Gulping, Karl blinked the sweat from his eyes and shook his head. Mrs. Lupens walked on and then he heard the trash chute door squeak open, then close. She came back and hurried past Karl, looking at him suspiciously. Squeezing his eyes shut, Karl mentally traced the steps he would have to take to get to his apartment door. How quietly could he unlock the door and get in before they bolted and stampeded? Could he do it? Every day it was same thing. Maybe he'd just start sleeping at the shop. Gulping hard again, Karl leaned very slowly to look around the corner, but he couldn't. That big one was probably looking up, watching him. He would always just stare and Karl knew what the animal was thinking. He knew exactly.

Terrific! I'm reminded of a favorite movie, "Rhinoceros" with Zero Mostel. And, my upstairs neighbors at a former apartment... but I think they had wildebeests instead! :-)

This is just pure-dead-brilliant digital art. And perhaps there's a Stephen King lurking in those little grey cells.
