Description

This is the great galaxy in the constellation of Andromeda. There are actually 3 galaxies in this shot. M31 is the main one, a little below its center and on the left side of it is M32, a satellite galaxy of M31 and to the right is M110 another galaxy that is independent of M31. M31 is visible with the unaided eye provided you find yourself somewhere with dark, clear skies (something that is sadly becoming more and more rare)....sorry, I'll get off my soap box :-)At two million light years away, M31 is the most distant object viewable with the naked eye from Earth. It contains over 100 billion stars. This was about a 30 minute exposure on Fuji 800 film through a 400mm /f5 short tube refractor. Thanks for viewing!

Super! I've too seen it optically unaided... Our closest galactic neighbor - what many do not know is that Andromeda is on a collision course with our own Milky Way. Sit back and wait a few more billion years. We should see some serious night sky. Thanks for sharing!

For any other doubters - I was raised in a wonderful family with values that held honesty at the highest level. Any work I post was produced entirely by myself. If you find it difficult to believe that "this stuff" can't be captured with a camera, maybe you should look at the equipment I use - http://www.rubiconbay.net/scope Maybe I'm reading something into YARDOBE's comment that isn't there - If I am, I publicly appologize.

Andromeda, known as the biggest galaxy of our local group... Since a little while we know that our galaxy is bigger than formely expected and that the milkyway seems to have be "vampirized" two other... Excellent capture!
