Description

had some fun making this over the weekend, not exactly accurate models as the only good reference material i could find was a screenshot from a pc game of a b17 on fire. - in case anyone was wondering, the clouds and sky are a mix of a hand painted texture (by hand painted i do mean photoshop)and a bunch of volumetrics for any clouds the planes fly through. also i should add it was never meant to look realistic, i have a really old photo of a ww2 spitfire, the photo itself is black & white but as was common back then, it has been painted over to give it the look of a color pic, i love the crisp and slightly painterly look it gives so this is what i was trying to re-create. +applied a slight sharpen filter in post as i like the `zing` it gives the pic. comments welcome...

Flakmonkey .... when I see this name below an image, it is always something great .... and so far away for me :-) AOM (artist of the month) is too small for you ..... if there would be AOY (artist of the year) challenge, you would get my vote :-)

really great work!! I'm starting to look at maya and it looks quite complicated! everything is excellent I'd only add a bit more motion blur on the blades, and a bit more fire on the second render..but really impressive work!I whish I become as skilled as you in maya! keep rocking man!

Excellent. But I'm going to nitpick. Are all the bombs falling in the same pattern? Almost looks like the planes are clones.... except that they are viewed from different angles. The lower pic is seconds after the top... all the bombs are in the same spot in relation to the planes that dropped them and the bombs under the exploding plane seem to have already dropped out of sight.... Just something that caught my eye.

very much in the tradition of Military paintings..the bombs on the planes were kept in racks, and dropped in a line straight down..there was some 'wobble', but not a lot..a minor point, and easily fixed. great artwork..could be that one of the bombs from an upper plane hit the wing of the lower (it happened, despite the best efforts of the pilots)

Stunning image. Fantastic detail on the vapor trails, prop blur and the general feeling of motion. Excellent work.
