Description

Hello, This is my first atempt at using 3D studio max to create a space scene so i would appreciate lots of pointers and websites to assist me in making these planets more realistic especially on the atmospheric distortions. I would like to thank "Tibbe" for his planet making tutorial and await for more complex yet easy to follow tutorials from others ranging in anything that deals with space like asteroids, comets, nebulas, etc.. The background image was made using bryce 5 but te planet is all 3D Max. Thanks for veiwing and hope to read your constructive advice.

looks pretty good, especialy the city lights. You also got the balance of colours pretty good. The atmosphere needs a lot of work though. If you dont need it for an animation, the best way I find is to actualy use a 2D circle alighned to face the camera. (you can use the "look at" controller) The you have a gradient ramp as a alpha map, so that the very edge of the circle is white fadeing to black. You can then apply a simply coloured noise texture for the atmospheric shades. Allthough it seems odd using a flate shape to make an atmosphere, rather then an outer "shell" of a sphere, its the most effective way of makeing the atmosphere look "3D". You can use it together with the "shell" method you have used here, only make sure you use the Extended Parameters falloff set up to max. (so you cant see the edges of the shell, only the center). You might like to use Max's earth cloud map as an opacity map too. (its in the maps directory, under space). If you need any help just message me. Theres a few other methods to do atmospheres I havnt mentioned here. (an array of shells with varying transparency, and using volume fog). But these methods take up much more rendering time.
