Can't you hear poor Sevvie pleading the Sorting Hat NOT to put him among the marauders? I can... Of course this is free fantasy. But it might very well have happened, just like Harry was almost sorted into Slytherin, Severus might have ended up in Gryffindor. He sure has the courage to be there. But I can fully understand why he wouldn't want to. Most likely the Marauders started bullying him on the Hogwarts Express. Perhaps that was even when Black coined the name Snivellus?
