Description

An odd one this - I was commissioned to create a Marigold Glove encased hand for the upcoming West End musical production of Victoria Wood's 'Acorn Antiques' The brief was not to create a photoreal reproduction of a hand in the rubber glove, but to make it a little 'zany and dynamic' - like the wearer is gesturing in a showbiz; 'Ta-dahh!' kind of way! :) - I had photo reference which I was told to ignore on one hand (excuse the pun!) and yet capture the essence of on another - so here it is. Anyway - this is the solitary gloved hand as it will appear on the show posters, press ad's etc, etc. --- On a technical level - this was my first ever hand model of any kind, let alone a rubber gloved one, and whilst I was modeling it, I found it tough to restrain from adding further details and tightening it up into a proper hand instead of leaving the rounded curves of stretched latex! Cinema 4D 8.5XL and Bodypaint R2 Cheers :) Some links on the press launch: BBC News The Sun Newspaper

I give you 5 stars, a big "thumbs up", give that man a "hand", my wife says that this render doesn't "rubber" the wrong way ... OK, I'll stop.

I remember this glove when it was just a rough mesh and you struggled with the creases :) Came out just great, excellent poster material!

Very nice. I thought I was the only one who got weird jobs like this! ;-) I once had to do some illustrations that required hands in surgical gloves. I tried using poser hands rendered in C4D with special textures, but I ended up doing a lot of retouching in Photoshop. I would be interested in seeing a tutorial on how you did this, if you have the time Adam. I'm sure a lot of folks would. Great work!

Thanks everyone! :) - Cyberhawg - my first thoughts were to use a Poser hand and forearm, make the rubber mat and render that, and then do lots of postwork to make it look like a glove with all the creases etc. I realised that that in itself would have been a lot of work, and if the client had wanted changes in position or pose later on, lots of work would be undone. I then contemplated trying the new cloth engine over a Poser hand, but again, it looked like a method that could create some problems and yield unpredictable results. In the end, taking the plunge with a cube, Mesh Surgery and a HyperNURB was the most practical solution! ;)

Really very nice. I actually liked the thumbnail a lot too (zoomed on the thumb) could you do another, detail-render of just the thumb, I thought it looked execllent on its own. Really nice work though

You have captured the "Rubber" texture perfectly!! As well as the glopve, with wrinkles and all! Superb!!!
