Description

No interesting view but try to imagine the history on this field! The one of you, who are bored by reading will never understand, what I felt when looking over the field. "Nae mair we'll see such deeds again, Deserted is each highland glen, And lonely cairns are o'er the men Who fought and died for Charlie." I read some books about mystic and history of Scotland. That's the reason I started to love the History of the fascinating Clansmen. So it was a MUST for me to visit the Culloden Battlefield, located 6 miles (9 km) east of Inverness, where 1746 the Clan System and the Jacobite cause came to an end. It was also the last battle to be fought on British soil. Bonnie Prince Charlie's men were defeated by the Duke of Cumberland, known forever after as "The Butcher". One thousand two hundred Highlanders lost their lives here on the morning of 16th April 1746. Buried in mass graves, they are remembered through stones which bear the names of their clans. Immediately after the conclusion of the battle, the men, under the command of their officers, traversed the field, stabbing with their bayonets, or cutting down with their swords, such of the wounded of the defeated party as came under their notice. This was done as much in sport as in rage; and, as the work went on, the men at length began to amuse themselves by splashing and dabbling each other with blood! They at length looked more like so many butchers than an army of Christian soldiers." Many say there is a ghostly feel to the place and even when the sun is shining there is a definite cold sensation in the air. Thanks for all your interest and sorry for the disappointment! ;o)))

Intriguing story, makes one look with other eye to this image !! Excellent !! One question though... was there indeed a cold sensation ? Do you suppose the fields are really haunted ? (ok, that were two questions lol)

No disappointmen here, a soul stirrin piece of history, and one of many in the world, where men cut and tear at themselves, all in the name of some cause, or greed , or religion, or hate, very inspirin pic, and I apreciate the history, for if there is no story, there is nothin but a pleasant view. Thanks for your time and words, and an eccelent shot of this place. *VLina

You are right.. the picture is not very special, but I can easily understand what you felt standing on this place. It's strange to feel the power of death long after the battle has gone. I have been to the graveyards in the Alsace (France) and I felt this strange power when I saw the ages from the men who died in battle.

A portrait of someone dear to you takes on special meaning. Your excellent capture of a placid field of green, viewed in the context of your comments, does as well. I've stood on historical battlefields and if we allow ourselves to feel their history rather than view them dispassionately, it can most definitely stir the soul. Thank you.

No dissapointment here, either. Really a beautiful shot with great composition and lighting. The history makes it all the more fascinating. I got a very similar feeling when looking out over the field where Pickett's charge took place in Gettyburg during the American civil war. Excellent work!

Such a dramatic story, Rita : I heared of ths story, but a long time ago. Looking at your shot with your so documented comment is changing the way I have on this field and you are right, there is a cold sensation looking at it :)) History has sometimes more depth than shots, and I like the way you mixed them :)) thanks

Superb text that matches so fine with the photo, Rita, i can picture the intensity of the emotions we can feel when standing right in this sad location. I'm sure the memory of the places are overloaded with the events that happened as are captured the souls of the men that died there!!! You are a Marvellous Lecturer, my friend, wanna hear more..................kiss.....V......SG

such a story that has been repeated to many times in the history of mankind. I think the demeanor of people changes during war and too many loses contact with rational behaviour. I do see a beautiful green field in your foto and with the history of the place, the song "green ,green grass of home " comes to mind. no disappointment here-vote

I dont think this is a disappointment!! It's lovely to be reminded that there is wide open spaces with lush grass, and clean air! Very peaceful place, considering it's history, beautifully photographed, and thankyou for the information. I just learned something today!=)

I'm not disappointed Rita!!! Your photograph is simple but very pleasant to look at!!! And the history of this fields is so horrible beside the softness of the landscape, that made its effect!!!

The bright lush scene doesn't really convey the story, but that can't be helped. It's a nice shot in it's own right....the history is always something special:) Thanks for sharing both:)
