Description

A traditional Japanese ghost of the meiji era. She looks like a beautiful woman, wearing a crown of candles. Her long, black hair floats up to strangle her victims. Like many ghosts, she can be recognized by the fact that her feet do not touch the ground...if she has any feet at all.

First off, I have to say the hair is really cool. This particular spirit is one of my favorites (vengeance sprites, like the furies), and a very potent one. YOu did is justice. :) Your use of the texture and the way you have set up the character is good. attention to the plainness of the figure is also well done -- very traditional, although that might escape a lot of people. The pose could stand to be a bit more active, though. These spirits are not passive -- they are active forces, in motion, and I think the jusxtapositon of that wonderfully serene figure and setting combined with more of a sense of motion in the pose would really up it a notch. It looks, as well, like you've used one or two bright spots. If I can be so bold, I'd suggest toning them down and norrowing them considerably. If you use P5, use the ambient and alternate specular on her and her clothing and use the lights elsewhere in the scene mostly, bringing one in only to provide dull shadows in the silk of the outfit. Make it pop and glow more, if you catch my meaning. I'd also suggest finding some sort of "flowing fabric" texture for the outfit to use as a sort of bump, give a greater feel to the way the clothing flows and make it look a bit more like blowin silk (faking it, IOW). Dang, I just really like that hair. I could just see it coming up around the neck of the hero you just know is about to walk in on her...

Thanks for taking the time to post such detailed comments. I agree 100% about the pose. I really don't like it; too static. In the analog world, my style tends to be very active and flowing. Art Nouveau-ish. But I have a hard time translating that into the digital world. In this particular case, I found the clothing very limiting, particularly since I was using SP, who doesn't have a lot of clothes. Perhaps I should have tried something with dynamic cloth. I struggled a long time with the lighting in this image. (Lighting is not my forte, I freely admit.) I did try the glow thing, but didn't like the effect. It washed out all the detail. I wanted dramatic light and shadow, but it was hard to do without the image being either so dark you couldn't see anything, or so bright it didn't look like nighttime any more. A big problem was the hair, which had a tendency to get lost in the shadows. I spent a long time in the Hair Room creating it, and I wanted it to show, darn it! ;-)
