Description

Dec. 7, 1941 about 0740 Hawaiian time: Scout 1 from IJN cruiser "Tone" radios that Lahaina anchorage is empty, confirming the report from submarine I-72 which checked the anchorage on Dec. 6. If any major U.S. ships where at Lahaina, the plans called for attack using torpedos only to maximize chances that the ships will sink in the deep anchorage with little chance for salvage. The E13Al was modelled using a 1/48 kit and various internet sources for reference. The terrain is parts of 2 1 degree DEM's (Maui SE and Maui NE). Scene is looking north from western Lanai towards the intersection of Pailolo and Auau channels. Eastern tip of Molokai is at left and West Maui on the right. This updated render improves the wing root filet, darkened the fuselage grey to bring out the white surrounds on the red markings, tied down the aileron acutating rods which were floating behind the aircraft, and tied down the rear wing hinge which was floating above the wing. The red sun color was toned down. 12/22/04 - This 2nd update has its machine gun ready for action as suggested by Pearl Harbor expert Dave Aiken at the pearharborattacked.com website.

And if I remember correctly, the IJN cruiser Tone was the cruiser that, six months later in the Battle of Midway, would have catapult problems, resulting in a scout plane's delay of a half hour. This delay was just one of the many occurances of luck that allowed for the US to win a battle that, I'm sorry to say, probably shouldn't have been won. The Navy War College replayed the battle and every time, the Japanese won. Great render.

Thanks all for your comments. Yes ChrisNz that scout launch delay was a glitch but scout 4 did find the U.S. task force but the observer failed to note that they were carriers.
