Description
As you leave the East coast of South Florida and head west on Southern Blvd., the human settlements starts to thin out. You pass Lion County Safari and rock quarries into an area that was once the Florida Everglades. Soon you are surrounded by sugar cane fields as far as the eye can see. After traveling miles through them you see in the distance a large building belching smoke. As you near it you realize it is a sugar refinery.
This time of year the cane is harvested and spent fields are burned off, so the air is redolent with the scent scorched sugar and is actually rather pleasant once you get used to it. The mill operates at full steam 24 hours a day. In the photo above you see the mill (there are many) that is just east of Bellglade, right next to the well known state prison. It is a bit eerie driving through this town and seeing the watchtowers, razorwire fences, and sullen inmates. Travel a few more miles west and you'd plop right into Lake Okeechobee!

interesting text and view! would like to know how the air smells there! although it is a mill with smoke it doesn't look like industry! wonderful and impressive capture of the mill in all the green around! ;o)

Wanna know something else? I took the photo while I was driving! I'm just happy it didn't get all blurry. It was an interesting smell, like when liquid sugar drips in the oven and burns--organic yet sweet.
