Description

Main picture: The temple of Karnak is a complex structure built , enlarged over 1300 years by many Pharohs. The site measures 1.5k.m by 800 mtres. At the time of Ramses III, 80, 000 workers were supposed to have been working on the temple. The temple is dedicated to the Theban triad Gods, Amun, Mut and Khon. Left: Nothing prepares the visitor to the temple of Karnak. Trying to describe it Amelia Edwards (19th century) said aptly: "It is a place that has been much written about and often painted; but of which no writing and no art can convey more than a dwarfed and pallid impression...The scale is too vast; the effect too tremendous; the senses of one's own dumbness and littleness, and incapacity, too complete and crushing." Right: The colossus of Pinedjem, high priest of Amon in Thebes and Pharoh of XXII dynasty.

I totally agree with your comments and with Amelia Edwards. My wife has always told me how impressive it was to be at this place (she's been there before we met). I've never been able to realize it only with the pictures (on tv or in the books), untill today. I must admit, thanks to your pictures and for the very first time, I now have a better idea of what Karnak is. I'll definitively go there one of these days.

The quote in your comments appears so true... how can one appreciate the majesty and magnitude of this place without being there... your great pics are a helpful start.

One can only sit in awe and amazement at what it must have been like to live during the time of the Pharohs...... To walk through the gateway and see it in all it's beauty and perfection... sigh Now it's only ruins, but still awe inspiring.......

Do they still present that "Sound and light show" in the evening there? Have been there many years ago before our kids were born... will remember the evening for this impressive show and the unusual heat we had that day/evening.
