Description

4 inches here. 11 inches in Victoria. Flurries in Harlingen! I dressed in my warmest winter clothes (jeans and two t-shirts), and ventured into the unforgiving climate to see the horrors the coast of Texas had to bare. Snow making machine vendors stood, starring at the sky, mouths open in disbelief like dustbowl farmers with withered crops. Where people suddenly learned to make snowmen is unbeknownst to me, however, there they were up at 7 am making snowmen on the beach. One lone snowman stood with his surfboard next to the 1900 storm memorial. Others patrolled the Seawall at strategic points as remnants of snowball fights littered the sidewalks. I could say that the children didn't know what to do with themselves, but like the foal that's never stood before balances on its feet, their instincts quickly took over and they all put the snow to good use figuring out the basic tactics of snowball fighting. I know that these kids will be parents ... maybe even grandparents ... before they see snow here again.

I live in friendswood (just north of galvaston) and I stayed up on the 24th with a small stack of wood and a fire going in my bbq pit. My friends and wife thought I was crasy but as it turned out a bunch of my neighbors ended up sharing my fire while we enjoyed the snowfall. I havent been able to do that since I lived in Pennsylvania, it brought tears to my eyes.

Excellent descriptive piece. I've always felt sad for those without the typical four 'seasons'.

I do love snow and find that the ability to make a snow man is imprinted upon the minds of all children adult or young. A great story ;0)
