Description

"The Art of Alchemy" By David J. Reid aka "Shardz" Software used: Poser 5, Photoshop CS With endless contemplating regarding topical subjects and various scene ideas, I decided to continue my "The Art of..." series with yet another installment. There will be more scenes to follow in this series within time, but I am sadly omitting the ever so obvious "The Art of War" theme as that title has been used on this site many times over *cough*. I will continue this series until I have exhausted all desire and/or imaginative content; whichever comes first. Since these scenes take me about a week on average to create in my free time, there might be other 'lighter' scenes that find their way to Renderosity in the meanwhile. My ideas for the 'Alchemy' installment were vivid in my mind upon starting this scene, but somehow drifted a bit and I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the end result. I settled for a lone spellcaster or alchemist who is practicing her craft within the solitude of her estate; perhaps out of boredom, loneliness, or desire for visitation rights for her lost loved ones. One interesting facet of this image is that I used 'gel' lighting for the first time using a grayscale image of large, looming trees attached to the main spotlight covering the patio area. Initially, I had just that one gel light for the entire scene, but complexities occured as more props entered the picture forcing me to add 3 more for ambience. Another major factor in this scene was time; I simply had very little this week and was growing anxious to finish as it had changed and reincarnated so many times that I was losing focus from my original vision. Sometimes you just have to let it go and move on to the next idea, avoiding complete creative meltdown. I'd like to take a minute to give props and complete appreciation to Danie and Marforno (www.damapro.com) for inspiring me to new heights creatively, and for creating such a gorgeous site with quality products featuring the most amazing artists around. Your generosity and dedication to the community compells and drives a lot of us to strive for greater heights, not to mention stunning the visual palette with every new creation. Also, I'd like to thank everyone very much who has been commenting on my work and giving me a reason to continue on with this labor of love. It's very assuring and appreciated greatly as I am finding Renderosity to be my home for quite some time. Thank you again. Have a happy and safe holiday season, and thank you for all your wonderful art you have shared with the community this year; I find it most captivating in so many ways! Sharing is the most overlooked ideal in today's world, giving is the most substantial ideal in our hearts. Thank you for your time, efforts, comments, and correspondence. *-*-* Credits List *-*-* *~ Retail Stuff ~* Rhiannon - Eden (Texture & Head Morph) Wyrmmaster - 2005 Sexy Spell Caster Poses Kathymoon - White Souls (Green in this case) Daz3D - Victoria V3 SR2 *cough* Daz3D - Wizard Robe for V3 Daz3D - Divine Messenger V3 for Wizard Robe Daz3D - Fantasy Wrap 2 for V3 Daz3D - Around The World for Fantasy Wrap 2 Daz3D - Fantasy Collar Daz3D - Glitter Fantasy for Fantasy Collar Daz3D - Guardian Angels (Ring) *~ Free Stuff ~* Kozaburo - Long Hair Evolution DM Productions - Cauldron (Torch), Pillars, Alter, Bench & Arch Wall

I think the concept is great, and the fx work is really good. However, with respect to other commentators, I think the lighting is a little flat and undramatic (though the gel is nice). The same comment goes for the pose, which seems more stock fashion modelling than spell casting. Also, if she's alone, she (maybe) shouldn't be looking so intently at the camera, as it seems we are in the scene thus - she's not alone. Gads, I'm picking a lot, but I like your concept and what you've done, so I hope I can help you make it even better.

The gel does very nicely in breaking up the flatness of the floor (it's one of my favorite techniques in lighting the stage as well). Love the green creatures -- I assume those are postworked? There is something odd about the background scenery though, some hard black lines in them, that make them look a little cartoony. Was this intentional. Oh...kudoes for getting away from "Art of War," which around here seems to translate as NVwS -- with or without a temple.

Lovely character and robe. The dramatic sky in the background fits in beautifully and I like the "spirit" effects, especially those surrounding the cauldron. Well done!
