Description

Swallowtail caterpillars of the Papilionidae family are usually smooth-bodied and vary in colour from green or yellow-orange with black markings to a colour pattern that gives them the appearance of a bird dropping or the head of a snake with conspicuous "eyes." All swallowtail caterpillar species possess a scent gland called an osmeterium that is located just behind the head. When disturbed, this fleshy-looking, forked, orange-red gland is everted from its pouch and releases a disagreeable odour. Because the caterpillars are relatively large and very colourful, they too (with royal and silkworm caterpillars) are quite noticeable. Very few species would be considered important pests. Many adults from this family are colourful and beautiful medium-size to large butterflies. Their name is derived from the presence of tail-like projections on the hind wings. Now here's a face you don't see too often. A wonderful macro Dan... I have .. (yes I know it sounds weird) .. a 'soft spot' for caterpillars. Pleasantly surprised.

Oh wow,its always great to see caterpillars, and how they have evolved some defenses. This one is one of the more cool ones in my book,to appear like the head of a snake puts the dear into any bird, lol. Excellent capture and job here for sure.

All this description was logged in with pen and ink and a little color wash by an illustrator. Now the camera transcends that dry lifeless collecting with something almost comical as "Alice in Wonderland's" smoking caterpillar.
