Description

steel drum Tuned gong made from the end, and part of the wall, of an oil barrel. The barrel's end surface is hammered into a concave shape, and several areas are outlined by chiseled grooves. It is heated and tempered, and bosses or domes are hammered into the outlined areas; the depth, curvature, and size of each boss determines its pitch. Melodies, complex accompaniments, and counterpoint can be played with rubber-tipped mallets on a single drum. Steel drum is really a piano combined with the drum, because you have the round concave metal instrument hit with mallets, which makes it the percussion instrument. But then you have all the notes in a circle of fifths...inside, with all the octaves next to each other. The steel drum of today evolved in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad from oil barrels left from World War II. (based on a concise article from the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online) Samples of Jazz music played on the steel pan can be downloaded here *** ~ *** Le steel pan : C'est
