Description

On January 18, 1911. The first landing of an aircraft on a ship took place as pilot Lt. Eugene B. Eli, brought his 50-hp Curtis pusher biplane in for a safe landing on a 119 ft. platform attached to the deck of the U. S. S. Pennsylvania in San Francisco Harbor. To arrest his plane upon landing, it's landing gear was provided with hooks attached to catch ropes secured by sandbags stretched across the landing platform. Improved versions of this ingenious arrangement were to become standard equipment on aircraft carriers. After spending an hour aboard the ship, he took off and flew back to this hanger near San Francisco. These flights demonstrated the ability of aircraft to ship-board operations. I hope you enjoyed, Thank you for your comments on my previous picture.

An outstanding capture. Perhaps one of my favorite types of photos. This shadowed vessel completely makes the scene too. The thing that I might change if it was mine is the colour of framing.Brightness of yellow sort of takes my eyes away.

Superb composition, perfect placement of ship versus sun ideally masked by thin cloud cover.. Bravo! Very well done indeed! By the way, I'm an ex-sailor :-)VOTE

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments... Yes "dBgrafix" this is not one of my favorite frames, I am just learning this stuff and experimenting. I was trying for the color and texture of sand, I agree, darker maybe better.
