Description

On January 21, 1941. The commercial production of magnesium first began in the US at Freeport, Texas. Magnesium, the lightest of all structural elements was extracted from seawater through electrolytic process. Herbert H. Dow first extracted the metal from Brine in Midland, Michigan in 1916. Dow's Freeport magnesium plant played a key role during World War II, when the lightweight metal became critical alloy for airplanes. US military aircraft production escalated, and as much as 2000 lbs. of magnesium was needed per plane. In 1998 Dow Chemical Co., shut down production at Freeport, due to crippling damage during a severe Gulf Coast Storms. Magnesium from Seawater... who would've Thunk it...

Wonderful shot and very interesting story of the impact of magnesium in World war II : I just didn't know this aspect of the 40's. Besides, your shot has no need of this story to be a very beautiful one :)) I enjoyed a lot your photo : beautiful colours and a breathtaking splash of this big wave :)) Bravo!! V
