Description

The story: Within the area of my habitation are several species of domestic feline. My son, aged four, has been studying these felines and has classified/named them as such. 1) Safety Puss. A small cat of polite nature, slightly wary and wears a yellow neon reflective collar. We believe this is because he organises meetings with other cats in the neighbourhood to discuss important matters of health & safety such as the correct manner in which to cross the road, how to avoid violent confrontations with dogs and personal hygeine maintenance for beginners and or kittens. 2) Nasty Orange Cat. An extremely large tom cat who dislikes human contact and prefers instead to stare at people while he marks his territory, profusely. He bit our cat in the foot for no apparent reason and therefore we don't like him. 3) Fluffy Cat. Lives next door and used to be an incredibly cute kitten. Is amazingly fluffy and nests in a bush in the garden, lined with her own fur. Rather shy but not averse to sneaking in through our catflap and eating our cat's food. Is a ruthless killer of anything feathered or squeaky. Attempted to eat a Seagull I was training to fly. 4) BIG Cat. A very large, elderly tabby cat that also lives next door. He's very mysterious and doesn't like going outside. He can occasionally be glimpsed through the curtains, sitting on the windowsill. 5) Styx. Our cat. He's beautiful, elegant, extremely long and agile. Is the cat equivalent of a moody teenage goth with an attitude problem. He likes jumping on the trampoline in the garden when it rains. 6) Black Fluffy Cat. Another fluffy cat who lives up the road. I borrowed him for a couple of hours one evening before we owned Styx because I missed having a cat in the house. When we got Styx, Black Fluffy Cat was BAD and he hit Styx and kept coming in the catflap. All the time. Every day. He stopped that after I introduced him to a cheap water pistol. Which brings me to. 6) Soft Puss. On the way to my son's Nursery we often encounter some of the above mentioned cats. One day my partner collected Daniel from Nursery and they came back very excited with stories of the softest cat in the world. His fur was a whisper of cobwebs, a single silk sigh, a satin dream of soft lovliness. I said "Meh!" because I didn't believe them. Then one night on the way back from the shops I met Soft Puss and discovered that my partner and son had only slightly exaggerated. The fur of Soft Puss was very soft indeed. As it was raining and Soft Puss was following me home, making a noise which sounded very like "meeeelk" I took pity on him and invited him into our humble domicle for a small bowl of Milk. The fat bugger hasn't left since. And he bites, even though he looks really small, cute and innocent. So he now lives with us and my son named him Andrew Softpuss which then turned into Andrew Sarcophagus due to a comedy hearing error on my Father's part. This picture is of the aforementioned cat in the "I look really sweet but if you touch me I'll rip your stinking fingers off" position. It took an extremely long time to do but was fun as it's been an extremely useful lesson in fur painting for me. He does look extremely soft! My cat adopts a similar position when she is in the mood for a tussle (usually with my hand). The image is very very beautiful and your story is delightful.

I'd give this any amount of votes for the sheer perfection in describing cats. It ain't too terrible a painting, too. Jemima often sprawls like that and I keep well away from her at those times. And, oh yeah, it's not a bad painting, either. And did I say you did a half decent job of the picture? :) You got a vote too. And why not, as Barry Norman would say.

Excellent! I have no idea how this is done in Paintshop Pro or Photoshop. I have never explored the possibility. Is it the manipulation of a photograph in a program by one of its processes, by overdrawing on top of an image, or drawing from scratch? I can draw a little by hand and vector draw in Corel Draw, but I would love to do this.

I know all these cats, I swear! I even own a black gothic teenager tom cat myself, running around like crazy right now without control over his little cat-breaks - and he slips into the sideboard. And when I laugh and point at him now, he will will go and tease the cat with the softest fur in the world ;o) Oh, yes, the image: You caught this moment perfectly. If one would reach out now to touch this fluffy kitten it will behave like a clasp knife - and it will enjoy this a lot!

Excellent painting, and a subject near to my heart. I've lived with cats all my life; my parents had two when I was born, and about three years later we adopted two kittens who were living in the basement of the house we were building. When the two older cats died, we got two more because four seemed the most comfortable number. This was disproven when my mom's friend's cat had babies, and we agreed to take two of them. Six is even better than four -- and both the kittens are Soft Pusses!
