a simple blob mesh with blizzard particles, and really sipmple geometry rendered with mental ray, i dont know if it goes in this category

hmz..closer to abstract maybe...but who cares. Good start, water is always very tricky but your certainly going the right way. More realistic water would be made from smaller particals that "cling" closer to the surface. You can also help realism but adding some textures to the geoemtry. eg, where the water is make the geometry look more glossy+bump, this will particaly help get rid of seams where the particals overlap the geometry. Anyway, looks pretty how you have it.
