Description

January 24th, 2005 Today we had GroundFighting class. It's not so much ground fighting as it is a type of defense. It's a way of recovering the upper hand in a hand to hand fight once you've lost it. It was alot of fun, and tiring. We were tumbling, falling, rolling, grappling, and laughing. In the end we all ended up a little more educated. At the end of the day we all realized that it was our last easy day. Tommorrow ... is PT. PT is Physical training. There are four exercises involved in the Galveston Police Department PT program: running, sit-ups, push-ups, up-downs; and something called "a hundred-and-one hills". Sgt. Trevino told us that watches are not allowed at PT. "Time doesn't matter." The other officers keep asking us if we've started. There's a strange expression on their faces when they find out we haven't started yet, half pleasant surprise and half pity. We've heard descriptions of some of what's going to happen to us and we get more apprehensive about it all the time. Today, our GroundFighting instructor informed us that if we were in bad shape, it's going to hurt really bad, if we're in good shape it's just going to hurt bad. Powerlifters, bodybuilders, and rugby players have all told us ... Sgt. Tevino is a machine. Last weekend he ran a marathon in Houston. From what everyone says, he can run forever. He said that sprinters might be able to outrun him in speed, but he has everyone on distance and endurance. The whole class seems like Jesus in the Mount of Olives right now. Tommowwow is going to suck. For some reason I couldn't bring myself to not go to the gym last night. I decided to go and do a light cardio. Twenty minutes on a low setting, just to massage out some lactic acid from my weekend workouts.I think it worked. On my way out of the gym I told the owner that I wouldn't be in for a few weeks because I was in the Academy and we'd be doing PT every day. He looked at me with an expression of half pleasant surprise and half pity. He said, "Oh, you're going to be one of those running down the seawall?" Am I the only person who doesn't know what we're going to go through tommorow? If I can still type, I'll update you on the PT results tommorrow.
