Description

My dad the designer of the M1-A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank and the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle came across this shot of a sabot round being fired. What makes this a one in a million shot is that the sabot is seen splitting about 36 feet away from the barrel of this M1. Sabot rounds travel at about 7,500 feet per second. The actual projectile is a tungsten carbide rod-like bullet that does not explode on impact but uses sheer kinetic energy to pierce any known armor known so far. Picture taken by my dad's friend. Thankyou for this image and the copyright explanation. Usually we only allow photos here by the original artist, except for historical images. I believe this qualifies as an historic image, and demonstrates the technology of the times; both photographic and weaponry.

That has to be the coolest picture I have ever seen! I saw the thumbnail and started wondering what program you used! I noticed the round before I read the caption and thought it was just something in the background because I didn't know it was possible to take a picture of something going that fast without special equipment!

Catching a bullet in mid-air is impressive. I love the flames in front and how it illuminates the dirt below.

Reminds me of the WW2 shot of the battlewagon firing a salvo. Just coming out of the smoke of the guns are nine 'little dots' -- the shells. (Official USN Photo I am sure. ;-) ) Yes, this is an amazing photo.

Awesome shot! BUT, if your dad really took part in designing of this MBT, you should never ever admit that to large audiences. That is a security violation.
