The founder of economy. The foundation for many sailors' stories and ship replicas in New York, Lelystad and Amsterdam. The United Dutch East Asia Company was established in 1602 with the aim of sending ships to Asia to buy pepper and spices. The VOC developed into a multinational with branches in a dozen Asian countries. Halfway through the 18th century the company employed 25,000 people, about 300 of whom worked in Holland. The company built its own ships, some 1,500 , which in total made some 5,000 journeys to Asia, where a network of trading posts was founded, from the Persian Gulf to the China Sea. It's impossible to imagine life today without the spices imported from Asia. Rene

Good shot, would love to see more, with more details. If you are interested in the Dutch East Indies Company, read the book, "Nathaniel's Nutmeg", about the establishment of the spice trade in Indonesia and Sumatra area of the South Seas. Very interesting book, on this period. It seems that even though the Dutch were the first european republic, with very liberal/tolerant views on religion and science and politics, they were ruthless in the spice trade and to the native peoples of the islands. Very much like the U.S.A. was to the native americans. Seems that Nutmeg spice in the 17th century was to the rich, as precious as gold. And the dutch wanted to keep their monopoly on it, guarding it zealously and ruthlessly. And it was ships like this replica that enforced the dutch claim to the spice islands. But I like these kind of vessels, so if you have more images, please share them. Their good for research, too.
