Just one historical note: The British (the forward ship, "running away" in this view) were never known to shy away from battle. In fact, they followed Nelson's edicts, "Never mind manuevers, go straight at 'em", and "No man can do very wrong, if he lays his ship along side that of the enemy". The French and Spanish, were more prone to run so as to save their ships from the superior fighting skill of the British.
