Description
My picture here is called La Belle Au Bois Dormant, which borrows its title from the children's story by the French writer Charles Perrault better known in English as Sleeping Beauty. The story was later re-written by the Brothers Grimm and Tennyson in his poem The Day Dream. The English Pre-Raphaelite Burne-Jones, painted a magnificent series of paintings called Briar Rose inspired by Tennyson's poem. The paintings took him a whooping 20 years to complete! I've always considered Burne-Jones's Briar Rose to be his best work and after seeing these paintings I wanted to make my version of Sleeping Beauty. The bottom part of my drawing is a sort of quotation of Burne-Jones's work - I even wanted my picture to be a tribute to him.
Medium: pencil on paper with some highlights in white gouache.
