1/1000 is so fast that it can only really be used outdoors and preferably on sunny days! Otherwise there just won't be enough light entering in such a short period. That's the fastest setting often used for sporting events where the moving ball needs to be seen clearly instead of a blur. It's intended for very fast-moving subjects! You don't need a speed that fast for capturing Sam, one of the slower ones should be fine, so don't worry about this. A lovely shot anyway, this series is getting better with each post. Well composed :-)

I am assuming your camera is digital? The only thing that I can think of is that if it is a digital camera, then it is more than likely the fact that given the amount of light in the room it not possible to shoot at that speed and so blanks out. Go outside and point at the sky. Does the same thing happen?
