Description

Newly painted 47640 'University of Strathclyde', formally 47244, enters Basingstoke on 20-Jun-91 with a passenger train. This red and dark grey livery was applied to locomotives intended for mail/parcels traffic. Note the locomotive/shore telephone aerial mounted on the cab roof and the third rail electric system, however, this locomotive has a 2,580hp diesel engine which powers a generator supplying electricity to traction motors at the wheels. Brush Ltd, Loughborough built 47640 was formally 47244, re-numbered February 1986 and named 'University of Strathclyde' April 1986. It is now in storage awaiting its fate. Never saw this color scheme. Got any class 45's or Deltics? Hey? Is that a headlight on the engine?? I didn't think BR went in for that sort of thing! ;-)
