"El Toro de Osborne" (The Bull of Osborne) is one of the silhouettes characteristic of the Spanish highways, and today, one of the most popular symbols of Spain. In 1956, the Osborne company, dedicated to wine-making and other spirits, ordered an advertising campaign to promote one of its products. The result was the stamp of a bull, which they placed more than 500 in the Spanish highways. In 1988, the Law of Highways forced to retire all the visible publicity from the highways. Osborne argued that the silhouette of this bull was not publicity, but an artistic expression and an element of the Spanish traditional culture. The public opinion and the arts community argued in favor of the "Toro". A sentence of the Supreme Court in 1997, considered that it was a nonadvertising emblem and, shortly after, the Meeting of Andalusia declared it a Monument of the Historical Patrimony of the region. At the present time, they are possibly up to 90 bulls of Osborne throughout all Spain, 21 of located in Andalusia. This silhouette has now been made into key rings, flags, stickers, t-shirts, etc.
