The Highwayman
By Alfred Noyes
"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight, watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."
He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair i' the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight, (Oh, sweet black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonlight, and galloped away to the West.
One of most romantic images in English literature is the Highwayman. In reality, these men were armed robbers. Oddly enough the horse made the man. To be successful, a highway needed a quality steed that was capable of great speed and endurance. Only two type of men could afford such a splendid animal. A highwayman or a gentleman with good resources and revenues. During his "off duty" hours, he had to pass for the latter. The highwayman were fashionably attired, well mannered, well spoken and always in the company of real gentlemen. These robbers usually maintained their gentlemanly personal even during robberies. One highwayman once abandoned a robbery to escort a beautiful lady safely to her next stop.
These men became legends in their own time. There were even some real gentlemen tried it. One very popular highwayman was pardoned. Another popular highway was sentenced to hang. As the custom, he was taken to the gallows in the back on a cart. Usually a crowd would gather to mock and taunt the condemned man. In this case, a crowd gather along the route see the famous man. Pub owners brought out their best wines and ales to the man. The pub patrons toasted the man and he returned their toasts. By the time the man reached the gallows he was in good spirits and quite intoxicated.
