My name is Derrick Shawn Grant. After several years in medical science, I have finally found my true calling as an artist. My current medium of expression uses self-taught computer graphics to create images that are true to life or surrealistic using Bryce, Poser, and PhotoShop. I have studied drawing and art history in college as electives and have painted on large canvas using oil and acrylics.

BIO
My name is Derrick Shawn Grant. I am now a graphics artist and starting my business, DK Designs. My Background is in Medical science and I an a classically trained Human Anatomist. My education occured in Montreal Canada where I attended, Vanier College, and McGill University. There I completed my BSc., MSc and Ph.D in Cell Biology and Human Anatomy. During this time I took several minor courses in Art History, Painting and Drawing. This educational background was followed by postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. I then moved on to Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Throughout these work experiences I taught myself to use Bryce, Poser, Painter, PhotoShop and other Graphic program. I encorporated both these fields of Science and Art to produce graphical designs for scientific presentation over the past 10 years. Finally I decided to leave Science to concentrate my efforts on graphic arts and design. I am committed to this form of contemporary art, and even though several pieces of my work illustrate classical themes and techniques, the final impression one gets, is completely different using this digital venue. Each image can take from one day to a week depending on if the feeling that I would like to convey. My motivation comes from things around me. I am sometimes inspired by dreams, books that I read, the movies, my family or my emotions at that moment. I hope that you will share my joy in my newly discovered art form.

Neons! I remember having these little guys when I was a kid - very lovely and well done.

7 fishes, only one of them can live in salted water. You'd better pay more attention on which fishes you put in your undersea scenes. Otherwise, lightning is interesting.

WOW! The most colorful underwater scene, I ever saw. Excellent work. Bravo!

I agree with BGHart....This is one of the best underwater scenes I have ever seen too......V Excellent talent!

Yup that is a very pretty image, but the Scalare angel and the neon tetras are south american. The arrowana is from southeast asia, and the other is I believe a snapper of some sort which does belong in the image. Still it is art and it does make it sort of interesting to see such a mix ;-) The arrowana would eat the angel and tetras btw, for an idea of their scale, the body of the angel would be about the size of the round tail on the arrowana amd the tetras would be small enough for the angel to eat. Very pretty picture though, great work!

Yep another underwater scene! Very cool one! Love those colors and the composition and lighting are great. Didn't imagine I'd find such pictures the same day I posted an underwater pic :-)

Wow, you guys are harsh! What's with the "you'd better pay attention..." bit? It's called constructive crisitcism. Try it. And FWIW, I just bought the Big Kahuna Reef game from Shockwave, and they made the exact same mistake. They included black neon tetras in a saltwater environment. Plus they gave an incorrect depiction of a flavissimus forcipiger (Hawaiian Long-nosed butterfly). So this artist is in good company. I think this was meant to be art, not a marine biology course. And I like it! :-P

Thank you so much for your comments butterfly fish, that is exactly what I have been trying to say. Art does not always represent reality and that what makes it art. One should try to enjoy the feeling it gives rather than accuracy. Nevertheless I love the debate this image has spawned.
