Pencil Sketch
Original title in Spanish : Flor Silvestre 2
Follow up to a fast sketch I had done the night before.
This was done in July 2003 but remains one of my crowning achievements in composition. My goal was to get everything I wanted to say into as few elements as possible. The result is every bit as simple as I had envisioned, but the symbolism is incredibly complicated.

Definitely one of your crowning achievements in composition. The kneeling woman in the centre of the flower is a nice touch, easily missed at first if not paying attention but very much integral to the piece. Thanks for all the comments the other day btw - and welcome back Nico, good to see you around!

Looking through my old drawings 16 years later, this one still really stands out to me. I remember at the time thinking that it was very simple, but my compositions now usually have 2-3 elements, whereas this one has 5 (or 6, depending on how you count). I do remember most of the story I was going for and each piece fit together in several ways, so I guess in a way it is simple. I guess I just like simpler art in general now. The composition is striking, with elements very rarely interacting, and each almost being an entirely independent drawing. I would be very scared to compose an image this way now. The way the elements are arranged on the page is nice, and the hand in particular looks pretty good, especially considering I did not use a photograph and instead just held my left hand very still for reference (most of the hands I drew back then were left hands for this reason). I could do better now, of course, but it is pretty solid.
I think I am a much better artist now than I was as a teenager, but I also can continue to be proud of some of my drawings from back then, particularly this one.
