Description

Well, it is official. My Olympus C5050 sleeps with the fishes. Well, not exactly...here's the scoop. This photo is the last taken before my camera fell into a canal last Sunday. I pulled a dumb move and tried to get a picture of this 3 ft. Florida alligator from the front and side. He had let me get this close without moving so I thought I could get even better closer angle. I leaned out over the water and craned my hand around to get a profile shot. He suddenly jumped and disappeared into the canal. I suddenly jumped and scooted backwards. The camera suddenly jumped out of my hand and splashed into the murky water. After I was done berating myself and the water cleared, I saw the camera was not submerged too deeply. I reached in and grabbed it. No tiny jaws closed about my hand luckily. I took out the batteries and memory cards and set in the sun to dry. However, there was water trapped behind the lens, and one of the batteries had burst. I gave it a week sitting under a lamp and it appeared to have completely dried out. There was some spotting on the lens, but I would deal with that if it worked. I popped some batteries in and turned it on. No luck. I tried it several more times with the same result. I now have a new paperweight that looks a lot like a camera. Sigh. I hope you enjoyed my cautionary tale. Always wear your camera on a strap if you are in a situation where it could get damaged. I know I learned my lesson. At least the memory cards survived. Back to shopping on eBay... ---- Olympus C5050 and PhotoshopCS.

OMG! What a grand adventure in the realm of photography! So sad, but I had to laugh! Sorry... but it was a great capture! At least when you look at your new 'paperweight' you'll have a tale to remember!

Oh Shit! A photographers nightmare...Sorry for your loss, but I can relate to you jumping back and dropping the camera...it's pretty funny tho-. About a month ago while walking on lava rocks, I tripped over my big ass feet and lost my balance. As I was falling onto the sharp rocks, all I could think about was how much damaged my camera was about to incur. I decided in an instant that I would hug the camera like a football and let my body take the beating. I hit very hard and have the bloody scars to prove it, but the camera was safe...not sure if if I would do it again.. It's a kewl image you have here, now you can lean it up against the paperweight so people will know what happened. Your story although tragic, is damn funny and gets my V hope you get a deal on your next one! Aloha, and again, sorry about the camera....

Now you have a personal vendetta with this alligator. I can see it now! Another series in the making. Great shot. You see, being creative is a dangerous job. See you later alligator. KP

Oh Kort, I'm very sorry for you! These things make us regret our actions but no way to get back we had! I was used to keep my cam on a tripod until I once step on a wobbly rock, tried to keep my balance and smashed my camera full speed against a solid rock! One positive thing, we learn to keep our camera safer, but the price can be high :( Another postive thing, a paperweight cam is easy to carry anyway.... An obligatory update will be necessary to keep up the good shooting! I definitely hope you will get something even better! Thank you for sharing this lesson, you show us it can happen any experienced photographer!

Yes, I once accidentally tipped a few lenses and a camera body onto a railway platform as a ran to catch a train. 3000's worth. Well Kort your limbs are in one piece so you will live to fight another day. Well done and tough luck :(

Sorry about your misfortune. Alas, I learned the same lesson more or less the same way in the tidewater marshes of Savannah, Georgia - One Nikon ignobly drowned - my strap is always firmly afixed around my scrawny neck now :-)

Hey everyone, thanks for all the sympathy and your own "horror" stories. I didn't post this to elicit sympathy (well, maybe a little) but as a cautionary tale and lost camera aside, it is kinda funny. ;] I'll get another cam and will definately take more care with it! 8^}

Oh No! New Canon 50-50 went down for the count? You must have been cussing up and down. Sorry to hear that. That camera has been producing some very nice pictures. I always keep the camera strap around my neck. With my luck, I'll fall with the camera. Something to think about when taking pictures regarding your experience. Aloha
