The conversion to B&W using mostly the red filter and then apply the remainder of the contrast in curves, is what I guess you did to achieve excellent results. The kind we do in fashion photography using RC grade 4 or 5 for high contrast with a nylon filter as the lens is open wide. To achieve softness in post production, I would say Gaussian Filter. EXCELLENT no matter how! A BIG V
