Probably as close as you would like to get to a crocodile. =) Photo taken at Northern Territory, Australia. EOS 300D + 70 - 200mm Canon USM IS. Handheld at F2.8.

Yep, you are right about that! And that would be with me using a super dooper extra long telephoto lense! LOL! Beautiful colors! It's unbelievable! And yes, should be in the National Geograpic!
