Description

- Scotland, Loch Awe - This is the last capture of St Conan's Kirk. Further west is the Bruce Chapel. This is notable for a larger than life sized effigy of Robert the Bruce, carved from wood with an alabaster face and hands. With light coming through the windows behind, the face and hands gain a translucence that gives the effigy a very life-like appearance. Below the effigy is a small chamber containing a bone of Robert the Bruce, brought here from Dunfermline Abbey. Robert Bruce (1274-1329) is surely the greatest of all the great Scottish heroes, yet the Hollywood movie Braveheart gave all the heroics to his compatriot William Wallace, making Bruce out to be nothing more than a self-serving opportunist. Since ancient times the Scots had been free to choose their own kings, a freedom that was a gift from God. But a gift that had needed a Robert Bruce to deliver. Thanks a lot for your interest and all welcome comments! Blessed Easter days again! ;o)

I'm not a history buff though I love movie about period pieces. The movie you are talking about I didn't get that feeling at all regarding Bruce (if I have the right correct charcter in my mind). My interpetation of Bruce was that he was influced by both his Dad and Wallace and was torn between the two. "You cannot serve two masters" and in the end I felt like it showed that he was truly going to be a great leader. Thanks for the background and the picture. VOTE
