Description

This is an effigy of Catherine (d.1610) the daughter of Sir Peregrine Bertie, Governor of Berwick on Tweed. She died in childbirth along with her child. Beside her (inset) is a touching little marble model of a cradle containing an effigy of her baby. The parish church of St James in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, was originally built in the 14th century. It was extensively rebuilt in 1879 and houses tombs from the 14th to the 16th-century and memorials of the family who originally obtained the Market Charter, the Willoughby de Eresbys.
