Description

The splendour of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lincoln differs greatly from that of St George at Goltho in yesterdays posting. (which itself is no less magnificent and no less worthy as a place of worship) One cannot be anything but in awe of its immense size, the third largest in Britain. The triple towered cathedral dominates the roman town, standing on a 200 ft high plateau and rising a further 365 ft. In the 14th-century when the central tower and those of the west end were heightened and spires added to, the cathedral was reputedly the tallest building in the world and at 525 feet being 3 feet taller than the Great Pyramid. It is 482 ft long and the crossing tower is 271 ft high. The chancel vault is 74 ft high and the nave 82 ft. The majority of stone used in the construction is local Oolitic limestone. The history is as follows: - 1072 Remigius started work on the Norman Cathedral. 1141 it was fire damaged 1185 an earthquake demolished all but the west front 1192 The building of a new Cathedral was started by Hugh of Avalon 1220-1235 the chapter house was built 1237 the central tower collapsed 1256-1280 a new tower was built and an Angel Choir added 1549 the central spire blew down 1807 the remaining spires were taken down (the spires on the two west towers) I could show a whole series on the Cathedral and I do in fact have the photographs. Unfortunately I can only show so much today and will maybe come back to it another time. The following is what you would see on a visit to the Cathedral and Lincoln City. A ruined Norman castle, built in 1068, overlooks the west front which is probably the finest fa

Great info (virtually an essay!) on this fabulous place, the roof is amazing! I don't think I would have been able to resist breaking wind in here, just to test the acoustics!!
