Description

Thank you for your comments yesterday! Good to see what's good and what's wrong! You're wonderful people, and it's very encouraging to read what you wrote! It's perfect weather for a little Sunday's hike so I decided to ascend the mountains along Lake Brienz (like yesterday's posting). Close to some trees I find this blooming toothwort (Lathraea squamaria), a parasite of many trees such as lime, poplar, sycamore, horse-chestnut, hazel, etc.. In the Netherlands this species is almost extinct but here I find several blooming flowers and I enjoy to find this little remarkable plant. The pale leaves contain no chlorophyll and the plant needs to obtain its energy from other resources than the sun. That's why they are parasites, they steal their nutrients from hosts like hazels. Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 70 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

Thanks for this beautifully detailed parasitic orchid shot, must find out what it is. Few realise that those expensive jungle hybrids have relatives that grow right into the Arctic Circle and others like this one have lifestyles more akin to funghi than green plants. Great. rafpenguin
