What is this image:
This is a Work in Progress of the City of Lyon, France in the 1300s. I have been working from maps and old sketches from around the 1500s and trying to adopt for this period.
How was it done:
The image is created in Vue 5 Infinite. I used a single terrain for the main city area and country side around it. Basically the whole image except for the distant trees and hills. The buildings are modelled in Vue.
I coloured a reference map in PS for the river and then applied that to the terrain editor. I then built up the hills.
Next I coloured the roads in PS and inserted into Vue for multiple textures using a similiar process.
After texturing I mapped many eco systems over it using the same PS process. There are separate ecoSystem layers for:
-the buildings
-another for the rock walls
-another for the trees
-another for the crops
-another for miscellaneous objects of many and various trees and rocks
-and one for the 533 cows.
All this work and still only a single object :).
Next I did some more models (modelled in Vue) for the churches, bridges and walls. I added a couple of flocks of birds (just got to have them). I then added some specific buildings along the riverside.
The entire model is now 3,005 objects with over 3.4 billion polygons.
The image was rendered with Global Illumination in Ultra mode and took about 12 hours to render.
I am about to render a large image but have a lot of detail work to get done first.

Well I dont comment too much lately but hell here I have to! This is so absolutely unbelievable do me a favor and sent the finished piece (if it ever will be) to a museum or some historical organization, you really should I bet you get some good jobs out of it ;-) didnt know what really can be done in vue till I saw this I, really literally speechless. Way to go I really cant wait to see this piece finished someday umm, for me it looks pretty finished as it is now ;-) amazing what some of you guys can do with those 3d apps!

This is amazing work Scott. The amount of detail is awe inspiring and this has to be the largest project you have ever done. It is so beautifully designed and there is so much detail, that this could be called finished now. So I cannot even begin to imagine how it will look when it is finally finished. Well done mate, and keep up the excellent work. This will inspire me to push myself for a long time to come. Beautiful, beautiful work. Keep it up and you have my vote. Not quite sure why Endymion would make such a comment...I love this. I can certainly appreciate the amount of work you must have put into this. It looks like a photo to me and I think it's an amazing piece of work! I wish I had the patience to try something like this...congrats on a wonderful wip...Hope to see some close up shots when it's all finished!!

Looks great! Amazing detail, can't wait to see the finished product! lol it looks done to me already! Endymion should look at every piece of art that was produced by the undisputed masters... Michaelangelo, Raphael, etc. etc. etc. they all worked and created things that were REAL. Not fictional spaceships running around blowing each other up (that's what I do =P). This is excellent keep it up and I must see the completed version! VOTE

Incredible, Scott, really incredible. Don't bother about some envious guys who will never reach such an artistic level like you! All these details are really amazing and the whole image is well worth all the work you put in! The only drop of bitterness is the small resolution possible here at Renderosity - would really like to see a bigger copy of this. Of course, this is a "must-vote-image" sorry, that there is no possibility to top this!

What else is left to say? This is fantastic work, and I'd really love to see it bigger somewhere, to fully apreciate all the details, maybe a few close-up renders? PS: Don't mind the buggers who leave stupid comments such as taking a picture of a town that existed as such a century ago!V
