Description

I couldn't really leave the Old Tool works without showing these amazing iron cog wheels. The waterwheel is off to the right and turning the large octagonal iron shaft. Wedged onto the shaft are a mixture of iron cogs and rims. The rims have wooden 'nogs' pushed into the holes to 'flick' or trip, hammers.
I liked this view, as you can see texture on the stationary rim (that is 'loose', and cunningly held up by a bit of plastic rope!), while getting a feel for things with the motion of the shaft, ('fast') working rim and distant cog.
Taken in available light to (hopefully) give it mood and a feeling of movement! Size wise I am standing up, so the top of those rims are about 6 feet (2M) high.

Another for me??? ;oP Wow, I love this one. The rusty and wet textures are lovely and the movement of the huge rim and cog are perfect. Well captured in the available light. So is this actually a working shop?

In reply to TwoPynts: No the works are preserved now. It was worked by the same family from about 1800 through to the 1970s making spades, shovels, ladles etc.. when the last member of the family to work here died. His daughter and her family look after the site and a trust has been formed to fully restore it, on special occassions they get one of the waterwheels and some of the equipment going.

Well done Kelvin, nice bit of history. The H&SE would have a field day with these flying around your elbows in today's working environment. Excellent!!!
