You're on the right track....the ports are closed. Most render this model in this kind of sea with them open, an historical accuracy no-no. 2 obvious crits: the sail configuration you have rendered was usually reserved for calm, very light winded days, when the maximum amount of sails were needed to get the ship to move, the outer studdingsails(or pronounced, stuns'l's) and almost all the sails would not be used, for fear of dismasting the ship("tearing the sticks outta her...."). The large middle sails on each straight mast, or Courses, and maybe the upper sails (the Royals, or Tops'l's) would be the only main sails usually used. And the triangular forward bowsprit sails (the jibs) and the after mizzenmast sail (the Spanker, or Driver) would be set for steerageway during a large storm. Some captains would hazard using all sails set, but this was not the norm, since a captain was responsible for the continuous maintenance and upkeep of the ship under his command, both military and civilian. Oh, the 2nd crit: with winds whipping up waves this large, spray and whitecaps would be visible and a large amount of bowspray would be shown as the 2000-plus ton vessel smashed through each wavetop....but a good render none-the-less.
