Description

Thought it might be interesting to follow an 'old workshop' theme for a while...
This was taken in a drop forge at Oldbury in the West Midlands (UK). This area was famous for 'metal bashing' and there are still places using old equipment.
This works were forging sledge hammer heads from 4 inch (10cm) hexagon steel bars using hand operated drop forges - the operator pulls on a rope, which tightens a strap on a revolving pulley, as the pulley revolves it lifts the hammer head (which is fitted with part of a die), another person brings in the heated bar and puts it on the 'die' fixed to the anvil. When the operator lets go of the rope the hammer drops - the picture above is the result!
I wanted to convey the 'thump' you get when the hammer hits, and to give a feel for the lighting and atmosphere in the place, so no flash only available light (this meant living with some movement - difficult to avoid as the whole place shook when the hammer dropped!). It took a few exposures to get this image, mainly due to digital camera 'shutter delay', but I hope you think it was worth it!
This works is still going, still making sledge hammers and pick heads, but they have replaced these old drop hammers with 'new' (1960s!) pnuematic machines.

There were many cutlery firms in Sheffield, where I was born, and in the night I could hear these 'drop hammers' and it was a sort of soothing sound for some strange reason. Thanks for awakening the memories. Love it!!!
