Description

As a follow on to yesterdays post (Bright Spark) after being 'bashed' by the drop hammer to form the hammer heads (2 at a time), the heads are then pressed out from the flattened end of the bar and hung in this tank of cold water to cool.
Mmm ... I can hear you thinking ... why like this?
Think about sledge hammers for a moment, they need hard-wearing faces on the ends, but need to be springy so they don't shatter when you hit something like a fence post or a thumb !
Dipping one end in a tank of cold water while running cold water over the other end quickly cools (and hardens) the ends, but the main central part of the hammer head cools more slowly giving all the little iron/steel crystals chance to calm down, get themselves in shape - this gives the hammer its 'springynes'.
Again no flash used here, just the light of the glowing hammer-heads.
