Description

This is a black and white version of an image I posted here last year. Called 'Arthur o Wynedd' (Arthur of Gwynedd) it is a piece we did for the Centre of Arthurian and Related Studies, who we are now in partnership with. It depicts how the historical Arthur may have look if he lived towards the end of the 5th Century. The chances are that he most likely wore a chainmailed coat rather than what he's wearing here and we'll be creating that at some point. His shield was generally said to have been adorned with an image of the Virgin Mary - but this is porbably more of a mis-translation and it would have been imbroided on his shoulder. We have placed the Christain 'Chi-Ro' symbol on his shield, something the 3rd Century Roman army started after becoming Christians. His sword, 'Caledfwlch' (Hard Lightning) - which through various Welsh/Latin/French translations ended up as Excalibur - would have been closer to the Roman spartha sword than the medieval broadsword of the legends. The men of what became Wales are known to have sported moustaches and it's also known that they whitewashed their shileds. Thanks for viewing, VH Costume and armour modeled and prepared by my esteemed colleague 'Phurst'. Lighting and finessing by me. Figure is a Michael 2 from DAZ.

Admirable amount of research. I would truly like to see an update image reflecting the insights your studies have provided. And posting a slightly larger image wouldn't hurt either. :o)

I'll have to go back and rerender at some point Moe. It didn't need to be large because of its use. You will see new versions in the next couple of months or so. Thanks, Mak.
