Description

Jane and Drew Pinkski are twelve year old twins. Along with their parents, they have immigrated to Mars. It is the early years of colonization and conditions are stark at best. Their parents have been assigned to Marineris Center--at this time--the second largest permanent settlement on Mars, although it will be eclipsed by later, more larger communities. The twins are surrounded by boxes that contain all the possessions their family was allowed to take with them from Earth. Jane is also a bit daunted by their current living conditions, but is still thrilled to be on Mars and is keen to know as much as possible about it. (As an adult, she will join the Mars Exploration Service, when it is formed, and get to see a lot of the planet as our Matronaut Jane.) At present, as they sit in their new livingroom, Jane is concerned about Drew. Unlike her, he is very depressed by the family move to Mars. He was just learning to surf back on Earth and it was fast becoming his passion. Now, he grimly stares out the "window"--really a plazma 3-D screen--and rues the day he was dragged willy-nilly from Earth to Mars. Sadly, Drew never adjusts to the family's new life and returns to Earth two years later to live with an aunt. He will never return to Mars. Jane, however daunted at the moment, thrives on Mars and eventually comes to love and appreciate her adopted home. Drew's inability to cope with Mars will always remain an unhealed ache in Jane's heart. Credits: Sci-fi room created by me in Vue4, using walls, door, ceiling, and floor modeled by Joe Kurz. All the room's textures are also by him. The Martian scene in the window was a 3d scene originally created by me in Bryce5. The original was an aerial POV, but I changed it to a ground POV in order to get my view from the window. (See my "Marineris Center" picture in this gallery.) "Props Pack - SciFi Cargo Containers" are by Modualz and Traveler (RDNA). Thanks for looking, and for any comments. Regards, Jeremy

Terrific story and concept. It does make me wonder about returning to the heavier gravity after a long absense - loss of bone & muscle mass would make a return difficult I think. Yeppers - surfing and water skiing may be diffcult on Mars for a couple millenia after colinization. LOL

Hmm... surfing and water skiing, got to find some largish bodies of water first! ;P Terrific pic, much detail inside the ship however outside the ship there is much flatness. Well done otherwise
