Description

Thanks for viewing !! :o) -- First of all, the snail in my previous upload was really just a snail lol im sure you all knew but i thought id tell you all just to be sure ;o) - The spider depicted here is in all probability Heliophanus flavipes. I couldnt find any particular info on it and no common name either but i do have some info on the lifestyle of jumping spiders, which this is, in general. Jumping spiders are named after their hunting way: they jump on their prey, often from quite a distance. Before jumping they attach a wire to the surface they are sitting on. In this way they can always return to the place they jumped from. They never weave a web though. Because they jump on their prey, jumping spiders have to be able to judge the distance. That can be best done with two (or four) eyes slightly apart thus giving a stereoscopic view. People and owls have two adjacent eyes just for that purpose. The jumping spiders have six eyes and two of them are extremely large. Their main function is to estimate distance. The spider here caught a midge fly (non biting mosquito), probably of the genus Chironomidae. Hope you like :o) - Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my last upload, "Reverse Mimicry" !! -- Many thanks, Jeroen

Hmm maybe a rarer one. Heliphanus cupreus This species is less common than Heliophanus flavipes in Wiltshire, though it is generally found in similar habitats. However, two of the recent sites are wood- and scrubland, whereas H. flavipes seems to crop up most often on chalk grassland. Great photography here my friend

Exceptional shot for such a small creature. I'm glad you and danob know what you're talking about, although I did think it resembled the tiny spiders that run around my fence panels when the sun is out. Superb shot!!!
